Despite setting their sights on other players, Tottenham Hotspur may consider securing Clement Lenglet if their initial summer plans don’t come to fruition.
The Daily Mail brings to light that the Bundesliga pair Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven are currently the priority targets for Spurs.
In their previous Premier League season, Tottenham conceded 63 goals, highlighting their dire need for stronger defensive capabilities.
The commencement of the transfer window was promising for Ange Postecoglou and his team, with the acquisition of Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison, and Manor Solomon.
However, Tottenham has not yet successfully signed a new centre-back, despite rumored interest in players such as Tapsoba, Van de Ven and Tosin Adarabioyo.
If their primary acquisitions fail to materialize, Tottenham may resort to enlisting Clement Lenglet as an alternate solution.
Lenglet May be Tottenham’s Answer
Last season, Lenglet was loaned to Tottenham after a transfer from Barcelona.
The 28-year-old performed decently as part of a back-three, yet the overall Tottenham defence still remained permeable.
Tottenham has yet to officially express a desire to permanently sign Lenglet this summer, but according to The Independent, he features as Postecoglou’s second-choice alternative.
Indeed, if Tottenham fail to secure their primary targets, they might turn to the French player as a plan B.
While Lenglet has been regarded as an ‘excellent’ defender, he’s had a hard time demonstrating his best performance since departing from Sevilla in 2018.
During his stint at Barcelona, the center-back struggled to establish a regular place, and despite a reasonable performance for Tottenham in the last season, his signing could be seen as underwhelming.
Speculations revolve around Tottenham being interested in younger, dynamic center-backs who appear to be a good fit for Postecoglou’s strategy.
