TalkSPORT commentator Dean Saunders has expressed his doubt that Tottenham forward Richarlison could serve as a satisfactory replacement for Harry Kane.
Richarlison encountered a difficult first season with Spurs after transferring from Everton the previous summer.
The 26-year-old forward managed to score only once in the Premier League, his performance marred by several injuries.
Despite the challenges, he has been successful as a striker for the Brazilian national team, scoring 20 times in 44 matches.
Nonetheless, Saunders insists that Richarlison is not capable of replacing Kane, this view is particularly important given the uncertainty surrounding Kane’s future and the interest from Bayern Munich.
Insufficient Ability of Richarlison to Substitute Kane
During a segment on TalkSPORT, Saunders argued that Richarlison’s performance does not make him a worthy replacement for Kane.
“If the only option for Ange is to approach Daniel Levy again,” he said. “Okay, what’s the plan? If you’re accepting the bid, I have a list of players whom you need to consider for substitution.
“Suppose you replace Kane with Richarlison, who’s unsuited to replace Harry Kane, and he only manages to score 15 goals a season compared to Harry’s 30.
“Considering his contribution to the club’s score, you would potentially subtract about 10 points a season. Subtracting those 10 points from your season’s total would bring Spurs down from a possible 5th-place to an 8th or 9th place.
“Given the financial repercussions then? That’s why they must evaluate this thoroughly, especially because Kane’s contract has expired, and he now controls the situation. Spurs are no longer the decision-makers.”
Although Richarlison has primarily performed as a winger for Spurs, his robust performances for Brazil suggest a potential fit for the No. 9 spot.
While Postecoglou commends Richarlison’s effort off the ball, Saunders correctly asserts that he cannot be the solution for replacing Kane should the English captain leave the team.
While Richarlison could score more playing as the lead striker for Tottenham, it’s likely that the club will actively seek a replacement if Kane were to quit Tottenham in the coming year.
