Aston Villa’s midfielder, Douglas Luiz, whom Ian Wright once deemed as ‘unrecognized,’ is reportedly being eyed for a surprising transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
It seems that Spurs are looking for an extra member for their midfield, having already acquired James Maddison this season.
As per reports by Mundo Deportivo, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is strongly speculated to join Atletico Madrid, becoming the favorite target for Diego Simeone, the coach.
Meanwhile, Tottenham is already on the hunt for Hojbjerg’s replacement, rumoured to be Douglas Luiz.
The Daily Mail suggests that Spurs are considering a shift for Luiz, contemplating a scenario where Hojbjerg departs this season.
Arsenal’s legendary Ian Wright seems to approve this move as he has earlier appreciated the potential of this Villa star.
Wright Asserts Luiz as ‘Highly Underestimated’
After witnessing Villa’s sweeping 3-0 victory against Arsenal back in November 2020, Wright praised Luiz on his podcast.
“Douglas Luiz is all set to become one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League,” claimed Wright.
“He’s highly underestimated. They left us no chances (on Sunday). It was like men playing against boys.”
Luiz has outperformed in the Villa team and has developed even more under the guidance of Unai Emery.
Previously, Tottenham’s local rivals had exhibited interest in the 25-year-old, who had renewed his contract with Villa in October last year.
Indubitably, integrating him into Postecoglou’s team would uplift the competition for the no. 6 position.
Nevertheless, persuading him to leave Villa Park this summer seems challenging, especially considering his recent contract renewal.
