Tottenham’s heyday appears to be a thing of the past.
The team, once finalists at the Champions League, is now battling to merely qualify for European tournaments.
Unbeknownst to many, the prime era of Spurs has slipped by, with few active remnants of this generation left in the team.
There has been a series of notable exits from Spurs in the recent past, but the exits of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen stand out as critical losses.
The Belgian center-half duo was among the Premier League’s top defensive pairings during their days at Tottenham, and Ledley King commented in a Twitter Space on the preceding Wednesday evening, that the absence of both Alderweireld and Vertonghen is deeply felt by Spurs now.

The Void Left by Toby and Jan
King had his say on this matter.
“Do you believe we’re missing Toby and Jan in our defense?” inquired King.
“Absolutely, they are arguably two of the finest centre-halves we’ve ever had; there’s no question that their presence will be sorely missed,” King responded.
“We were indeed fortunate to have both of them in our ranks at the same time. What I admired about them was they never lost their cool, always remained grounded, and had a deep understanding of the game. I would have loved to share the field with either of them.”

Forever Missed
The void left by the departure of Alderweireld and Vertonghen is palpable within Tottenham. Their partnership may indeed be irreplaceable.
They were not only two of the most competent defenders in the history of the Premier League, but their synergy is also something that is hard to recreate.
Having played together at the international level, and at Ajax before joining Tottenham, the duo gained an intimate knowledge of each other’s game style.
Alderweireld bid adieu to Spurs in 2021 for £13m, whereas Vertonghen departed the team a year before free of cost.
It’s worth acknowledging that age is a factor every player must deal with, but the absence of these two players is distinctly felt by Spurs.
