Paul Merson maintains that if Manchester United wants to make a play for the Premier League title this year, they need to secure Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
He added that in the absence of Kane, United’s goal would be to target the top four.

This viewpoint was conveyed by Merson on Twitter following the 2-0 preseason defeat of United by Real Madrid.
The statement made by him was: “Man Utd’s key to challenging for the Premier League is Kane…absence of Kane will leave them striving for a spot in the top four.”
These utterances from Merson might concern Tottenham Hotspur fans who do not wish to fuel any more motive for Kane to depart.
Spurs recently achieved a 5-1 victory in a friendly against Singapore’s Lion City Sailors and are optimistic about a fruitful pre-season.
However, with the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane’s career and his “unnoticed” standing, fans are likely to steer clear of this subject.
Despite several elite clubs showing interest in Kane, a switch to Manchester United seems improbable.
Insinuations are that Tottenham would resist a transfer to a top-tier rival like Premier League, and United’s enthusiasm seems to be waning.
Yet, as Kane has not committed to a new contract with Spurs, rumors will persist.
United could secure a league title with Kane from Tottenham, suggests Merson
If Kane were to depart this summer from Tottenham as Merson indicates, then the club would likely be compelled to search the transfer market themselves.
Their prime choice for a replacement forward seems to be Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Yet, for fans of Spurs, it’s hard to picture a future without their team leader, Harry Kane.
Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, is hopeful that he won’t be forced to supervise a rebuilding phase post Kane’s exit.
Postecoglou’s ambition is to secure victories with Spurs, a goal that would undoubtedly be fueled by Harry Kane’s presence.
Irrespective of the merit in Merson’s viewpoint on Kane, it seems unlikely that Tottenham would sanction such a transfer.
As they set their sights on re-entering Champions League football this season, Spurs’ need for Harry Kane is paramount now more than ever.
