Micky Van de Ven, a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur, is said to have the makings of being the next Jan Vertonghen.
The Athletic has reported on standout players in the ongoing Under-21 European Championships.
Wolfsburg defender Micky Van de Ven has grabbed attention in the tournament.
The 22-year-old had a noteworthy debut season in the Bundesliga last year.
Van de Ven appeared in 33 league matches, scoring a goal and providing an assist as he adapted to the German top division.
Originally signed from Dutch second-tier team FC Volendam, Van de Ven’s talent has been apparent for some time.
Van de Ven excels as a ball-playing center-back and is evidently skilled in possession.
His defensive capabilities are consistently improving, demonstrated by his excellent performance against Belgium in their 0-0 draw at the beginning of the tournament.
Now, Van de Ven has been compared to Tottenham legend Jan Vertonghen.
Spurs are currently looking for a center-back with Vertonghen’s skillset, and Van de Ven might be the answer.

Tottenham’s target Van de Ven likened to Vertonghen
The Athletic’s report on the left-footed defender stated: ‘Envision him as a broad-shouldered Jan Vertonghen.
‘He might not be there yet, but it wouldn’t be an unreasonable comparison in three to four years.’
Van de Ven has been linked to Tottenham as they attempt to address their defensive concerns from the previous season.
Liverpool is also said to be considering him, and his exceptional recovery speed is renowned in the soccer world.
This quality, which is not usually associated with center-backs, could be extremely beneficial in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

The Australian manager favors proactive teams and insists on swift, attacking football when possible.
Thus, having a player like Van de Ven, who can thwart opponent counter-attacks with his speed, would be highly beneficial.
For Tottenham fans, it might be too soon to be overly excited about the comparison between Van de Ven and Vertonghen.
Nonetheless, if the transfer materializes, Postecoglou will need to find the new Toby Alderweireld to recreate Spurs’ most notable center-back partnership of late.
