Potential £30m Defender Acquisition for Tottenham Encounters Hitches, Deal Might Be Abandoned

There are ongoing speculations that Tottenham Hotspur’s intended purchase of Micky Van de Ven might not come to fruition.

The Athletic provides more insight about Spurs’ search for a much-needed centre-back.

In case there was any doubt in the mind of Ange Postecoglou about Tottenham’s need for more robust defence, the outcomes of yesterday’s friendly would certainly have put that to rest.

Despite being just the third-best team in Singapore, Lion City Sailors managed to score the first goal against an almost maxed-out Tottenham team.

Thanks to a blunder by Ben Davies, the home team seized the opportunity and scored past the new goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.

However, Tottenham managed to bounce back, emerging victorious with a 5-1 scoreline, thanks to Richarlison’s triumphant hatrick.

Throughout this summer, Tottenham have been associated with several defenders, but until now, we haven’t seen any deal materialise.

Currently, it seems that Tottenham’s negotiations for Wolfsburg’s defender Micky Van de Ven are facing obstacles.

The player himself isn’t the issue it seems,

On the contrary, the negotiations between the two clubs seem to have reached a stalemate.

Potential acquisition of Van de Ven by Tottenham faces issues

According to a report from The Athletic, the negotiations for Van de Ven aren’t going as planned.

It mentions that an agreement amongst the clubs appears elusive and ‘rumours are that the deal might be abandoned’.

Considering Tottenham’s urgent need for at least one more defender, they may have to agree to Wolfsburg’s demand for £30m.

However, Tottenham has got the impression that the German club isn’t willing to sell, which could complicate the negotiation process.

If Tottenham fails to strike a deal for Van de Ven, they need to find an alternative soon.

An additional link has been made with Edmond Tapsoba, however, Leverkusen too, are reluctant to part ways with their defender this summer.

Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo is reportedly eager for a move, with his contract drawing near to its end, but he’s not Tottenham’s preferred pick.

There’s also a proposal about potentially bringing Clement Lenglet onboard again, following last season’s loan agreement.

Postecoglou is aware of the importance of securing any new player transfer sooner rather than later.

Working with any new recruit during the pre-season would make their integration into the team considerably smoother.
